The Downloads directory is a crucial part of every Windows machine. It is the default location for any files downloaded using a web browser like Google Chrome.
It’s not unusual for the size of the Downloads folder to grow into the gigabytes because it contains all downloaded files. Move the Downloads folder to a different disk if you want to save your downloads even after reinstalling Windows 10 or if you need more space on the drive where Windows 10 was installed.
You may relocate your Downloads folder in Windows 10 and Windows 11 just like any other user folder. With the help of this manual, you’ll be able to relocate the Downloads folder in Windows 10 and Windows 11.
How to relocate the Windows 10 or 11 Downloads folder
It’s worth noting that you may copy the Downloads folder to a USB device and use that instead of the internal storage. Unfortunately, doing so requires you to leave the USB device permanently linked to your PC.
First, press the Windows logo key plus R or type “run” into the search bar to open the Run command prompt.
Two, hit the Enter key after typing shell:usersfilesfolder in the Run prompt.
The next step is to right-click the Downloads folder in the generated folder and choose Properties.
The Downloads folder’s properties may also be accessed by right-clicking the folder in the File Explorer left pane and selecting the option.
Fourth, choose the “Location” menu item. You’ll find the Relocate option under the Location menu. Select a different disk than the one used to install Windows 10 or 11 and then click the Select folder option.
The fifth and last step is to hit the “Apply” button.
Sixth, when prompted, select the “Yes” option. Well, that settles it. Everything in the Downloads folder, including subfolders, will be transferred.
